Vata-Pitta

Vata-Pitta Dominated Body and Skin:

Vata Body & Mind: Vata-pitta dominated types must balance between episodes of vata and pitta dominance at different times as arises the specific aggravation. When vata is dominant, you may feel ungrounded, anxious, nervous and jittery, and when pitta is dominant, you may feel hot, angry, irritated and harsh.

Vata Skin: Dry skin and hair with episodes of oily skin issues such as acne, oily T-zone, skin rashes, freckles, sunburn, itching skin, early aging are some common concerns that vata-pitta dominated personality might experience.

Vata-Pitta Skincare Ritual

Dry and heated environment aggravates the skin condition of vata-pitta types. A skincare ritual centered around balancing the specific aggravated dosha as required is the key to creating balance for vata-pitta types. For example, during times of extreme heat, the pitta element may be more aggravated and cooling skincare practices will relieve the heat symptoms. Similarly, during the times of high dryness like winter weather, a skincare ritual that hydrates skin without making it oily is best suited.

Svarasya’s vata-pitta skincare dinacharya is designed to balance the dry, rough, agitated, inflamed and sensitive energy with calming, hydrating, nourishing and strengthening energy to create balance for vata-pitta dominated skin.

Diet for Radiant Vata-Pitta:

Vata-pitta diet must be balanced as per the specific episodes of constipation, anxiety, insomnia, lack of focus, irregular digestion or episodes of acidity, heat sensation, allergies and other heat manifestations.

A diet that balances the two aspects of vata-pitta types based on specific aggravations helps this type create balance. Abide by these rules of Ayurveda to attain internal balance that reflects outwards as radiance:

  • Consume warm and cooked foods that pass the process of digestion easily. In case of pitta aggravation with signs of gastric troubles and acidity, spices must be avoided.
  • Consume 3-4 liters water everyday.
  • Consume hydrating soft moist foods such as cooked cereals and soups.
  • Consume good oils such as ghee, nuts and avocados to moisten skin internally.
  • Support digestive fire by avoiding refrigerated foods, cold beverages and iced deserts.
  • Nourishing foods for vata-pitta types include rice, quinoa, oats, whole wheat, red lentils, mung beans, tofu, sweet and juicy fruits like bananas, mangoes, papayas, apricots, peaches, pineapples, dates, kiwis, plums, melons, avocados, coconut and pomegranates. Cooked grounding vegetables like carrots, turnips, beets, peas, cucumbers, tomatoes, kale, zucchini and sweet potatoes help control typical fleeting feelings of vatas.

Yoga & Pranayama Practices

Yoga and pranayama practices for vata-pitta types highly depends on what element dominates at a specific point in time. During times of vata dominance that shows up as anxiety and nervous disorders, yoga practice that supports peace, calm, rest and relaxation is recommended. Restorative yoga poses and stretching yogic practices help release and calm the active energies during vata dominance. Yoga asanas for the colon, pelvis, lumbar spine, intestines and sacroiliac balance restore vata energy back to base of the body below navel where vata energy resides. Spinal twists, forward bends and calming inversions also help vatas get back to balance. During times of pitta dominance that shows up as acidity, gastric issues and anger, the focus must be on restoring coolness and calmness at mind-body level. Yogasanas that include heart-opening postures are great during times of pitta dominance. Pitta energy accumulates in the center of the body, hence, it is important for Pittas to work on abdominal area. Abdominal twist postures such as Ardha Matsyendrasana, forward bends and heart opening postures such as Dhanurasana and Bhujangasana, Surya Namaskars, Tadasana, Uttanasana, Virabhadrasanas, Vrksasana, Ardha matsyendrasana, Apanasana, Viparita karani are quite balancing for vata-pitta types.
