From the very beginning, ghee was not just an ingredient for us, it symbolized a whole tradition. Ghee is considered divine in Vedic philosophy as a source of 'Sattvic' energy that imparts purity, nourishment & clarity to the mind. Ghee in ancient India was highly used in rituals and offerings. Ghee is believed to enhance nutrition absorption, tissue purification & is a source of deep nourishment that makes ghee a deep inner beauty ritual in itself! Beyond its spiritual & physical significance, ghee serves as a cornerstone of daily Ayurvedic life, supporting digestion, immunity, and vitality.
On the path of living life inspired by Yoga & Ayurveda lifestyle, nearly 15 years back I came across this miracle ghee cream, 'Shata Dhauta Ghrita', as I delved deeper into Ayurveda’s ancient manuscripts. This 100 times washed ghee preparation immediately captivated my interest. It seemed surreal to read about this beauty elixir and its elaborate and intense making process of washing ghee 100 times in a copper vessel that transformed pure ghee into a light, cooling, and deeply rejuvenating skin cream with a texture that feels like silk and heals like magic.
Ghee is said to pacify the fire element in the skin, body & in the nature, which makes it divine. Remember, how ghee is used in Indian tradition during Havan, as a sacred offering to control the fire. When ghee calms the fiery tendencies on the skin, the skin restores its luminosity from the deepest layers.
This understanding of ghee from Ayurveda literature was very exciting for me, as if I had chanced upon a rare secret formulation from Ayurveda that I could make & offer to my dietary clients for holistic skincare. My love for ghee, thus started! So, here I share our story of how ghee became the miracle ingredient from Ayurveda, that initiated the journey of Svarasya in 2015 & continues to be our pride.
The story began in 2015 when I started healing women of their skin concerns naturally with my dietary consultations & Yoga classes. Women experienced huge transformation on their skin as they switched from their conventional modern lifestyle, to adopting the traditional Yoga & Ayurveda lifestyle. Back then, I used to make Ayurveda skincare products at home, and I remember how making Shata Dhauta Ghrita used to completely consume me! It was a tedious, very difficult and an elaborate process that required hours to complete the process of converting ghee into Shata Dhauta Ghrita by washing ghee 100 times in a copper vessel. But the output was so deeply satisfying. I knew I was making something magical and super-healing. This was a secret skincare recipe that anyone had hardly known back then!
I started facilitating Shata Dhauta Ghrita to my dietary & yoga clients, along with a set of few other home-made skincare products for compete skincare that overtime nourished, beautified & healed the skin. I researched the Ayurveda manuscripts & formulated a combo of 5 functional skincare products which are still Svarasya's core products, and till date we say these are the most powerful formulations we ever created!
Shata Dhauta Ghrita, Sukurabu, Kiyomeru, Chandrika, Sumukha came together forming a ritual for women with many skin concerns including sensitive skin, dry & dull skin, oily and acne prone skin, pigmented skin and aging skin. Women used to come back and tell me on my DMs, that they haven't used such a skincare product ever, it gives results in just one application, the results for Svarasya were over the moon. Back then, Svarasya was named as 'The Ancient Beauty' and our facebook page started getting a lot of love by women.
We literally started as a home-grown brand just with an intention to help women go completely natural with great results on skin, we now had to thousands of women reaching us from everywhere, and it became so overwhelming at that point, that we were struggling to cater to the demand of Shata Dhauta Ghrita due to its labor-intensive making process. However, unbelievable reviews for Svarasya kept pouring in, so much so, that reputable magazines started reaching out to us based on our credibility bult on reviews for our products. For the first time I realized the power of what I was creating! And that's where I got serious about converting 'The Ancient Beauty' into a professional Ayurvedic skincare brand 'Svarasya' with its own identity & character.
I decided to expand the horizons & started thinking of making Shata Dhauta Ghrita scalable, so it can be made available to everyone in India & globally. But the challenge was finding the facility or a like-minded partner who could produce the cream in bulk aligning the similar values in their Shata Dhauta Ghrita making process. I started researching about Shata Dhauta Ghrita, this time on more serious note, keeping in mind the scalability. I connected with some very remote South Indian Ayurveda manufacturers who were producing this ghee cream in a very small quantity & found that most of it was being consumed by the foreigners, in the Yoga community specially in Europe & the US or at traditional Ayurveda centers.
I realized Shata Dhauta Ghrita is a divine ointment in South India & much of a secret for North India. Since the manufactures I found were mostly creating Shata Dhauta Ghrita in a small quantity, I could not scale this by procuring it from reliable sources. After putting constant efforts into planning how to make Shata Dhauta Ghrita scalable, I decided to partner with a vendor who agreed to lend us the space & facility and happily agreed to align to our principles, but I made sure that the cream was made in my presence. I used to visit the facility regularly to make it in small batches.
In 2017, with all the scalability system in place, we launched Shata Dhauta Ghrita under the brand name 'Svarasya', becoming the first Indian brand promoting Shata Dhauta Ghrita at a larger scale and offering the cream in India & globally.
This ghee-based 100 times washed ghee Shata Dhauta Ghrita truly became the backbone of Svarasya, & a source of customer trust for us. Today, as we keep growing, thinking what else can we retrieve from the treasures of Ayurveda beauty rituals the authentic way, we keep going back to ghee. At Svarasya, ghee is more than an ingredient, and I personally use ghee for every other thing! In my morning water, in my breakfast, on my skin, as a hand cream, on my scalp, and why not! It's one of the richest sources of purest fats that everything from internal tissues to outer skin & scalp!
Ghee & the process of making Shata Shauta Ghrita is such a journey for Svarasya. We have come far ahead in time, but this divine process taught us the essence of patience, transformation, and purity. Just as ghee is clarified slowly, Svarasya has been carefully crafted, step by step, ritual by ritual, to bring authentic Ayurvedic beauty into the modern world.
