Ghee in India is not just a fat type, it's a part of rich Indian cultural heritage! With its references in Vedas as the pure fat to be sacrificed to the agni, to its health and skin benefits, ghee is not just a food, but a whole tradition worshipped in India!
However, ghee is gaining eyeballs globally not just for its internal benefits, but its external application benefits as well! The surge in the demand of classical Ayurveda ghee cream 'Shata Dhauta Ghrita' is a testimony of this fact!
Shata Dhauta Ghrita, pronounced in Sanskrit as śata dhauta ghṛta', is an ancient Ayurvedic skincare formulation propagated in Ayurveda for its healing, cooling and rejuvenating energetic effect on the skin.
The name literally means "hundred times washed ghee," and this traditional formulation is at the forefront of Ayurvedic beauty and wellness rituals.
Shata Dhauta Ghrita Story
Shata Dhauta Ghrita in Sanskrit translates to 'Shata meaning 100', 'Dhauta meaning Washed' and 'Ghrita meaning ghee (clarified butter)'. Literally true to its name, Shata Dhauta Ghrita is made by washing cow's ghee 100 times in a copper vessel with purified water. However, at Svarasya we add a layer of purity to this cream by washing ghee in licorice and rose water for its enhanced cooling benefits. This process transforms ordinary ghee into a completely natural, light, creamy Ayurvedic moisturizer with powerful skin-healing properties.
Ayurvedic Origins of Shata Dhauta Ghrita
Revived from the classical Ayurveda text 'Charaka Samhita', this formulation is prescribed for treating burns, wounds, scars, inflammation and skin disorders like eczema and psoriasis, premature aging and dull skin. According to Ayurveda, ghee is sattvic and balances the body with its ojas or immunity, glow, and vitality supporting properties.
The Philosophy Behind 100 Times Washed Ghee
The symbolic relevance of the process of washing ghee 100 times is more than just physical! The process resonates a purification ritual performed with devotion to transform ghee into a soft, smooth creamy base. In the Vedic numerology, 100 is considered a sacred number that signifies completeness and perfection, and Shata Dhauta Ghrita proves that just right as it transforms into a beautiful cream by the end of 100 rounds of washing. It is considered to be a divine nourishment as per Ayurveda, with ghee being the sacred element in yajnas (Vedic fire rituals). Therefore, energetically Shata Dhauta Ghrita is the subtlest essence of ghee that nourishes both body and spirit.
Traditional Lore Meets Modern Wellness
Some Ayurvedic traditions describe how Vaidyas prepared Shata Dhauta Ghrita during full moons, infusing it with lunar cooling energy. Today, Svarasya’s handmade Shata Dhauta Ghrita continues the sacred tradition infused with intention, purity, and care.
How Svarasya Found Shata Dhauta Ghrita?
A decade back Svarasya first launched the miraculous ghee cream Shata Dhauta Ghrita revived from the classical texts of Ayurveda. Back then, as a part of our research, we were speaking to the small manufacturers of Shata Dhauta Ghrita and found that 90% of Indian women did not know 'Shata Dhauta Ghrita', until about a decade back, which was surprising since Ayurveda has been in the DNA of Indian culture.
We found that this miraculous face cream was made in a very small quantity in South India and was only within the scope of seasoned Ayurvedacharyas to talk or propagate it since no one except the experts in Ayurveda were aware of this ghee cream. It was a complex handmade cream and required pure ghee to convert ghee into a cream base. The traditional process took days before the ghee converted into a powerful skin cream.
We came to know that about 90% of the cream was being shipped to Europe for years as Europeans had a huge demand for this traditional Indian secret skin healing cream!
Our founder Deepti Sehgal, decided to launch this in India in 2017 on a big scale, making Svarasya the first brand to talk about Shata Dhauta Ghrita and making it accessible to every woman in India and globally.
This miraculous skin cream is known in Ayurveda to be both therapeutic and beautifying in nature.
For the women dealing with chronic skin conditions like burns, scars, eczema and psoriasis, Shata Dhauta Ghrita helps soothe and calm the heat on the skin with its high penetrability and anti-inflammatory properties.
